Background

Our client operates five heavy crude oil and petroleum loading terminals. They ship massive quantities of hazardous liquid commodities to North America refineries each year. In doing this, their operations team executes many repetitive, manual and digital tank car loading functions.

Our client saw the need to increase terminal throughput, while also decreasing their operational work place health and safety risks but could not find a solution currently in market to meet their needs.

Challenge

High-level probes, which are often used to meet regulatory requirements for overfill protection when loading rail tank cars, require frequent replacement. The ones used by our client had a reported high incidence of failure, averaging replacement every 24 months.

A failed probe meant that our client was unable to load rail tank cars at that loading station and it could take days to schedule and execute the installation of a new probe. This significantly decreased terminal throughput and increased operational expenses.

Since implementation, hundreds of rail tank cars have been successfully loaded using TRIG TLoad sensors.

The TLoad PRO is a durable radar sensor that provides our client with an automated solution for maximizing loading throughput into closed rail tank cars.

The sensor collects real time level measurement of the commodity inside the tank car. The sensor then signals to indicate when critical high-level volume is reached and, in multi-load terminals, initiates shut down commands; never coming into contact with hazardous commodities.

Extended Technology Lifespan

The lifespan of TLoad PRO was proven to be 250% longer than the current high level probe.

Increased throughput

The TRIG solution was tested and consistently shutdown loading within 15 mm (0.6”) of the high high level setpoint. Our client was able to effectively fill each rail tank car with 1.1% more crude oil.

Safer Processes

The TRIG solution allowed our client to completely automate critical high level shut down commands, increasing safety in their current process.

 

Based on these results, our client recommended TLoad PRO installation on all remaining loading spots.
